Description

Indulge in the rich, savory flavors of Egyptian beef goulash wrapped in a delicate, flaky phyllo crust. This quick and easy recipe combines tender beef, aromatic spices, and the buttery layers of phyllo for a truly delightful dish.

Ingredients

– 1 pound ground beef

– 1 onion, diced

– 3 cloves garlic, minced

– 1 tablespoon paprika

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1 teaspoon ground cumin

– 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

– 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

– 1 cup beef broth

– 1 tablespoon tomato paste

– Salt and pepper to taste

– 8 sheets phyllo dough

– 4 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 5-7 minutes.

2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the onion is translucent.

3. Stir in the paprika, cinnamon, cumin, coriander, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.

4. Pour in the beef broth and tomato paste. Stir to combine and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.

5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

6. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in a 9-inch pie plate, brushing it with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, offsetting each layer slightly to create a rustic, layered effect.

7. Spoon the beef goulash filling into the phyllo-lined pie plate.

8. Top the filling with the final sheet of phyllo dough, brushing it with the remaining melted butter.

9. Bake the phyllo beef pie for 25-30 minutes, or until the phyllo is golden brown and crispy.

10. Let the pie cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a more authentic Egyptian flavor, you can add a pinch of ground cardamom or cloves to the spice blend. To make this dish ahead, prepare the filling and assemble the pie, then bake it just before serving.
