Description

These French Onion Soup Bites are the ultimate savory appetizer or snack. Featuring caramelized onions, melted cheese, and a soft, pillowy bread base, they’re bursting with the rich flavors of classic French onion soup in a bite-sized form.

Ingredients

– 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

– 1 tablespoon olive oil

– 1/4 cup dry white wine

– 2 cups beef broth

– 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

– 8 slices day-old French bread, cubed

– 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

1. In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until deeply caramelized and golden brown.

2. Deglaze the pan with the white wine, scraping up any browned bits. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the wine has mostly evaporated.

3. Add the beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

4. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

5. In a large bowl, toss the cubed French bread with the caramelized onion mixture until the bread is evenly coated.

6. Scoop the bread and onion mixture into a greased mini muffin tin, pressing down gently to compact.

7. Top each bite with a sprinkle of shredded Gruyère cheese.

8. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the edges are golden brown.

9. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before carefully removing the bites from the muffin tin.

10. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of garlic powder to the onion mixture. These bites can also be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven before serving.
