Ingredients
– 1 lb sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
– 1 yellow onion, diced
– 3 cloves garlic, minced
– 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
– 1 cup heavy cream
– 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
– 1 tsp dried thyme
– 1/2 tsp salt
– 1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
1. – Preheat oven to 375°F.
2. – In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
3. – Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the onion is translucent.
4. – Stir in the maple syrup and heavy cream, and bring the mixture to a simmer.
5. – Transfer the sausage mixture to a 9×13 baking dish and spread it out evenly.
6. – Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
7. – Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
8. – Serve hot, garnished with fresh thyme if desired.
Notes
This casserole can be made ahead of time and refrigerated until ready to bake. Simply add 5-10 minutes to the baking time if baking from chilled. For a spicier version, use hot Italian sausage instead of sweet.
