Description

Indulge in the classic taste of Wisconsin Apple Kringle, a buttery, flaky pastry filled with a sweet and tangy apple filling. This homemade version is easy to make and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

– 2 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 1/4 cup ice water

– 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

– 1/2 cup granulated sugar

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

– 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

– Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

1. 1. In a food processor, combine the flour, chilled butter, and salt. Pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. 2. Add the ice water and pulse until the dough just begins to come together. Do not overprocess.

3. 3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

4. 4. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

5. 5. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 12×16 inches.

6. 6. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Fold the dough over the filling, forming a long roll.

7. 7. Transfer the kringle to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the top with the egg wash.

8. 8. Bake at 375°F for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

9. 9. Allow the kringle to cool for 10 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try using a combination of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples. You can also add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the apple filling. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
